Cumulative COVID-19 Cases in ICE Detention

Here’s another look at data illustrating the need to #FreeThemAll. The plot below shows cumulative COVID-19 counts over time for all facilities as reported by ICE and compiled via the Wayback Machine. The legend lists facilities in the order they first appeared on the ICE COVID-19 website. Facilities at the top appeared earlier while those at the bottom appeared more recently.

To isolate and focus the line on a specific facility, double click on the name of a facility and the plot will only show that line. Single click on additional facilities to include them in the focus plot. Double click again and all of the lines will reappear. Hover over any line to see the counts for a given day.

An Interesting Note on Recent Errors in ICE’s COVID-19 data.

On July 15, Laura Lynch Senior Policy Counsel at at ALIA and Aaron Reichlin-Melnick Policy Cousel at AID noted there was a significant typo in ICE’s reporting on COVID-19 numbers at the Alexandria Staging Facility.

Other Irregularities in ICE COVID-19 Data

We’ve also found similar irregularities, though not of the same magnitude as the typo at Alexandria Staging Facility.

Otero County Processing Center run by MTC:

  • 6/25/2020 ICE reported 146 cumulative cases
  • 6/26/2020 ICE reported 143 cumulative cases
  • 7/7/2020 ICE reported 142 cumulative cases
  • This is a difference of 4 cases

Winn Correctional Center run by LaSalle:

  • 5/31/2020 ICE reported 116 cumulative cases
  • 6/1/2020 ICE reported 99 cumulative cases
  • This is a difference of 17 cases

San Luis Regional Detention Center run by LaSalle:

  • 7/6/2020 ICE reported 7 cumulative cases
  • 7/7/2020 ICE reported 6 cumulative cases
  • This is a difference of 1 case

Catahoula Correctional Center run by LaSalle:

  • 5/31/2020 ICE reported 60 cumulative cases
  • 6/1/2020 ICE reported 51 cumulative cases
  • This is a difference of 9 cases

Adelanto ICE Processing Center run by ICE:

  • 7/14/2020 ICE reported 14 cumulative cases
  • 7/15/2020 ICE reported 9 cumulative cases
  • This is a difference of 5 cases

Glades County Detention Center run by Glades County Sheriff’s Office:

  • 6/29/2020 ICE reported 112 cumulative cases
  • 7/1/2020 ICE reported 111 cumulative cases
  • This is a difference of 1 case

It is unclear how the number of cumulative cases can go down unless there is an error in reporting. Not counting the massive error at Alexandria Staging Facility, there are discrepancies totaling at least 37 other cases.
