AVID July 2021 Position Statement

AVID released a position statement July 2, 2021. The statement is built around four points. In summary, we:

  1. Call on the Biden Administration to close OCPC for a history of violating DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’s foundational principle of not tolerating the mistreatment of individuals in civil immigration detention.
  2. Request that Congress cut funding for immigration detention and legislators sponsor bills ending immigration detention because the institution has a history of mistreatment consistent with definitions of torture.
  3. Urge the federal government to divest from detention and invest in community based case management.
  4. Call on Congress and the Administration to require ICE to comply with existing federal requirements to release full inspection reports.
